Why Early Eye Exams Matter

It’s recommended that infants have their first eye exam between six and nine months of age, especially if there’s a family history of vision concerns. Early eye exams can help detect signs of reduced visual clarity, congenital ocular disease, and binocular vision problems. Binocular vision is where the eyes work together, for example, to see depth ie. 3-D vision, but this can be reduced due to the presence of a “lazy eye” – many of which are not detectable to the naked eye! It is crucial to diagnose and treat “lazy eyes” (amblyopia) early – before permanent vision loss sets in. After an initial exam, children should continue with annual eye exams to ensure their eyes remain healthy and their vision is developing appropriately while they continue to grow.

Scheduling regular eye exams is important, but if you notice any changes in your child’s vision—such as squinting, holding objects close, unaligned eyes, frequent rubbing, or clumsiness—don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns.
